What to expect moving to Grimes?

Curious what people think. Poverty rate is 4.9%, which is pretty low. With a population of 15,810, Grimes is a small town. It's a a small town city with about 15,810 people. Average temperature is around 50--F, so expect cold winters. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The weather takes some getting used to. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The suburbs are where most families end up. Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from Boston about 4 years ago. The main reasons were school and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Good internet infrastructure
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are wild, gas is excellent.

Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. No regrets on my end..

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are pricey. You get used to it after the first year.

My experience has been mostly positive. the quality of life is solid. The only thing I'd watch out for is pet-friendliness. Other than that, Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a sales manager, 26, moved here 4 years ago from LA. I've lived in Westside and Old Town, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Can feel isolated
3. The job market situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Westside: Great for families. solid vibes, walkable.
- Old Town: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from LA, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is manageable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
