I'm single, late 30s, and Rent is about $1,363/month for a decent place. The median home value here is around $367,000, which seems about average. Median household income is $73,873, which feels about average for the area. It's a a small town city with about 15,785 people. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.
Pros:
- Growing food scene
- Low crime in most areas
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good internet infrastructure
- Plenty of shopping options
Cons:
- Limited nightlife
- Lack of diversity
- Chain restaurants dominate
Is this normal for Gulf Shores? Looking forward to hearing from you all. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The food scene here is surprisingly good.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value walkability, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely improving and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Sunset) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. community vibe is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Bought a house here in 2016 and it exceeded my expectations. Property values have gone up significantly since then.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Westside for 5 years. Moved from New York for weather. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is decent. We bought in 2021 at k and it's now worth about the same than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.
**Employment:**
engineering is strong here. consulting is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are developing for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it exceeded my expectations. The outdoor scene is average - we have biking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Westside schools are challenging. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Traffic during rush hour is rough. Winters are long and cold. And traffic can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 5/10. Would recommend to anyone considering it.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

I've lived in Riverside for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from Seattle, I was surprised by pet-friendliness. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good internet infrastructure
- The community vibe scene is underrated
The downsides:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for remote workers. Good luck with whatever you decide..

I've been living here for 14 years and I'd say I'm still on the fence after all this time. The weather is excellent compared to other places I've lived. Overall Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
