Alright, We have two kids and Crime rate is something to consider -Gulf Shores sits at 375.2 per 100K. The unemployment rate is 1.6%, which is pretty low. Homes are going for about $367,000 on average. Average temperature is around 67--F, so the weather is moderate. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. What do you all think? Appreciate any input. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a physical therapist, 52, moved here 13 years ago from Chicago. I've lived in Sunset and The Heights, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Nice parks and green spaces
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Winters are long and cold
2. Bugs and humidity in summer
3. The traffic situation is stable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Sunset: Great for retirees. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- The Heights: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Chicago, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $70K-$70K here.
**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I love the pace of life here. Compared to Seattle it's decent.
