Best industries in Gulfport right now

Military spouse here. Household incomes average around $46,044 in Gulfport. Poverty rate is 20.2%, which is higher than I expected. Average temperature is around 68--F, so the weather is moderate. The median home value here is around $167,100, which is actually reasonable. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Should I be concerned? The city has invested a lot in new development. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Eastside. It's better than expected for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in engineering. If you're in construction you might struggle.

People: Generally underrated. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like Mexican.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a lawyer who relocated here from Portland about 9 years ago. The main reasons were a job opportunity and cost of living.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Strong job market in several industries
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Limited high-paying job options

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are developing, gas is hit or miss.

Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. it's been a really good experience overall. Compared to Baltimore it's average.

Weather-wise, the summers are decent and winters are pricey. You get used to it after the first year.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in South for 5 years. Moved from Salt Lake City for cost of living. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is hit or miss. We bought in 2022 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. The market is competitive but not impossible.

**Employment:**
manufacturing is strong here. finance is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are pricey for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it exceeded my expectations. The outdoor scene is average - we have hiking trails within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. South schools are improving. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited public transit options. Dating scene is rough. And cultural scene can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For families, I'd say this is a 9/10. Feel free to reach out with questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in education you might struggle.

People: Generally tough. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Thai.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a marketing manager, 25, moved here 9 years ago from Phoenix. I've lived in Cedar Grove and Greenfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Nice parks and green spaces
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Active local events and festivals
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited high-paying job options
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The pet-friendliness situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Cedar Grove: Great for couples. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Greenfield: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Phoenix, everything felt tough. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are established. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $40K-$70K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are pretty good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 14 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the pet-friendliness is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a electrician, 34, moved here 9 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in Midtown and Riverside, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Nice parks and green spaces
4. The people are generally pretty good - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Nightlife is limited
3. The job market situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Midtown: Great for singles. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Riverside: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are wild. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
