Longtime lurker here, I'm retired and Homes are going for about $432,200 on average. The unemployment rate is 4.0%, which is pretty low. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The suburbs are where most families end up. Should I be concerned? Thanks in advance! Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The city has invested a lot in new development. The suburbs are where most families end up.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 6 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is challenging.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Bought a house here in 2020 and it's not perfect but it works for me. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

Used to live on the Uptown side, now on the The Heights side. Completely different vibe. I love the pace of life here.

Public transit is tough here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's exactly what I was looking for.

Came here for my partner's job and stayed because there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The healthcare is honestly hit or miss and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
