Rent in Gurnee getting crazy

Longtime lurker here, I'm single, late 50s, and You can expect to pay around $1,594 for rent here. Crime rate is something to consider -Gurnee sits at 131.2 per 100K. It's a a smaller city city with about 30,486 people. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse.

Pros:
- Low crime in most areas
- Diverse community
- Easy commute
- Plenty of shopping options

Cons:
- Cold winters
- Limited nightlife
- High property taxes
- Limited cultural events
- Chain restaurants dominate
Worth the trade-offs? Thanks! Night life is decent if you know the right spots. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The weather takes some getting used to. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

Public transit is better than expected here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's exactly what I was looking for.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a contractor, 45, moved here 2 years ago from Seattle. I've lived in Cedar Grove and The Heights, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Four distinct seasons
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Property taxes are high
3. The food scene situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Cedar Grove: Great for couples. decent vibes, walkable.
- The Heights: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Seattle, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $50K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a physical therapist who relocated here from San Diego about 9 years ago. The main reasons were school and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited high-paying job options

Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are manageable, gas is decent.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I work in hospitality here and I genuinely enjoy living here. The job market for my field is excellent. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

We moved here with our family and I love the pace of life here. Schools in Lakewood area are tough. Kids love it here.
