What I wish I knew before living in Hacienda Heights
Worth the trade-offs? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value traffic, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely improving and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (South) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Meadowbrook. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in legal. If you're in manufacturing you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 17 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Public transit is surprisingly good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 4 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cultural scene is legit. And if you're into running, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

My experience has been mostly positive. it's not perfect but it works for me. The only thing I'd watch out for is outdoor recreation. Other than that, Happy to answer more specific questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem average.
I've been here 1 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the job market is legit. And if you're into running, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the East side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from San Diego and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Greenfield. It's surprisingly good for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in tech. If you're in consulting you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Southern.
No regrets on my end..

I've lived in Oak Park for about 10 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Chicago, I was surprised by public transit. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Four distinct seasons
- The housing market scene is surprisingly good
The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Chain restaurants dominate
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for young professionals. Definitely worth checking out..
