Hello, I'm a nurse at the local hospital and Poverty rate is 12.8%, which is around average. Rent is about $1,196/month for a decent place. It's a a smaller city city with about 59,389 people. The city has invested a lot in new development. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. What do you all think? Any help is appreciated. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Midtown. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in legal. If you're in real estate you might struggle.
People: Generally pretty good. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Italian.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cultural scene, you'll love it. The community vibe is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Fairview) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in Highland for about 12 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Raleigh, I was surprised by cultural scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Good schools in most areas
- The healthcare scene is solid
The downsides:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Dating scene is rough
Overall I'd rate it 7/10 for singles. Happy to answer more specific questions..

As someone who grew up here, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. A lot has changed in the past few years though. walkability used to be much reasonable but now it's challenging.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from Baltimore and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Sunset. It's hit or miss for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 6 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: improving. Tons of options if you like BBQ.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a nurse who relocated here from Portland about 3 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Lots of new development happening
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are stable, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. No regrets on my end..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 4 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is housing market. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is excellent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the Riverside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..
