Living in Harahan -the reality

Curious what people think. I relocated for work and Poverty rate is 5.9%, which is pretty low. Average temperature is around 72--F, so it's warm year-round. It's a a small town city with about 8,939 people. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The weather takes some getting used to. Has anyone dealt with this? It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. The city has invested a lot in new development. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The weather takes some getting used to.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value walkability, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely solid and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Baltimore, be prepared for the culture shock. cost of living is completely different here. And Rising rent and home prices.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Midtown. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in marketing. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.

People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 14 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: solid. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Bought a house here in 2022 and it exceeded my expectations. Property values have gone about the same since then.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is community vibe. it's improved dramatically in recent years. Worth doing your research before committing.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem solid.

I've been here 15 years and it's not perfect but it works for me. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Downtown side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Definitely worth checking out..

Bought a house here in 2022 and I have mixed feelings honestly. Property values have gone up a bit since then.
