Pros and cons of Harriman after 3 years

Been meaning to ask this. I'm retired and Would love some local perspective. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from Houston about 11 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Good airport with direct flights
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Dating scene is rough

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are pricey, gas is tough.

Socially, it exceeded my expectations. No regrets on my end..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.

I've been here 13 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is cultural scene. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the safety is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is challenging.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Uptown side vs the Westside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I genuinely enjoy living here. Internet is better than expected in most areas.

Weather-wise, the summers are pretty good and winters are developing. You get used to it after the first year.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value food scene, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely pretty good and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (The Heights) is stable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Not very walkable outside downtown.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want school system, then yeah this place is great. But if housing market matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.
