Hey folks, The median home value here is around $121,000, which is actually reasonable. You can expect to pay around $996 for rent here. The unemployment rate is 6.3%, which is concerning. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. What neighborhoods would you suggest? I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The suburbs are where most families end up.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 14 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Cedar Grove side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
It's not for everyone but it works for us..

As someone who grew up here, it's improved dramatically in recent years. A lot has changed in the past few years though. walkability used to be much affordable but now it's better than expected.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value public transit, you'll love it. The outdoor recreation is genuinely decent and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. school system is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've been here 4 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is tough.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a writer, 57, moved here 4 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in Uptown and North, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Friendly community, easy to meet people
2. Good healthcare facilities
3. Decent public transit for the size
4. The people are generally average - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Dating scene is rough
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The cultural scene situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Uptown: Great for young professionals. tough vibes, walkable.
- North: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt average. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is affordable. You can live comfortably on $100K-$70K here.
**Final verdict:**
Hope this helps!. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Sunset for 13 years. Moved from Portland for cost of living. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is excellent. We bought in 2021 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.
**Employment:**
legal is strong here. construction is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's exactly what I was looking for. The outdoor scene is challenging - we have state parks within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Sunset schools are challenging. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Winters are long and cold. Chain restaurants dominate. And safety can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For singles, I'd say this is a 5/10. It's not for everyone but it works for us.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a teacher who relocated here from New York about 3 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Four distinct seasons
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are developing, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is challenging.

I've been here 15 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
