I've been here for 2 years and Household incomes average around $59,752 in Harrisonburg. Poverty rate is 12.5%, which is around average. Homes are going for about $278,200 on average. Average temperature is around 54--F, so expect cold winters. Rent is about $1,120/month for a decent place. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Would love some local perspective. The weather takes some getting used to. The city has invested a lot in new development. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. I've lived in Greenfield for about 3 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from Nashville, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The traffic scene is challenging
The downsides:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited high-paying job options
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for families. Feel free to reach out with questions..

I work in tech here and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The job market for my field is decent. Definitely worth checking out..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from Austin about 8 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and cost of living.
Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Active local events and festivals
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are established, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..
