Not sure if this has been asked before, but Rent is about $1,120/month for a decent place. It's not perfect, but the community is solid.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 1 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Cedar Grove. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in retail. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally decent. It took about 18 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: decent. Tons of options if you like Korean.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I've been living here for 6 years and I'd say there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The traffic is improving compared to other places I've lived. Overall It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Came here for a job opportunity and stayed because I genuinely enjoy living here. The public transit is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

We moved here with our family and it's been a really good experience overall. Schools in Uptown area are challenging. Kids love it here.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value job market, you'll love it. The housing market is genuinely hit or miss and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Bought a house here in 2016 and I genuinely enjoy living here. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 6 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is surprisingly good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the North side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into rock climbing, this place is solid.
