Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.

I've been here 11 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is solid.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the Meadowbrook side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Hope this helps!.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 7 years ago from San Francisco and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in The Heights. It's improving for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in government. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.

People: Generally solid. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: surprisingly good. Tons of options if you like seafood.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

As someone who grew up here, I'm still on the fence after all this time. A lot has changed in the past few years though. community vibe used to be much pricey but now it's underrated.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Lakewood for 6 years. Moved from Minneapolis for weather. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is decent. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts.

**Employment:**
retail is strong here. construction is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I'm still on the fence after all this time. The outdoor scene is hit or miss - we have beaches within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Lakewood schools are solid. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Urban sprawl is real. Chain restaurants dominate. And job market can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For couples, I'd say this is a 6/10. Good luck with whatever you decide.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value school system, you'll love it. The safety is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
