Hattiesburg quality of life -am I missing something?

Military spouse here. Crime rate is something to consider -Hattiesburg sits at 230.6 per 100K. Poverty rate is 23.0%, which is higher than I expected. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Is this normal for Hattiesburg? Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely solid and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Eastside) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Pittsburgh, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Can feel isolated.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

My experience has been mostly positive. I genuinely enjoy living here. The only thing I'd watch out for is school system. Other than that, Feel free to reach out with questions..

Came here for retirement and stayed because I love the pace of life here. The walkability is honestly excellent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Hot take but it's not perfect but it works for me. I know a lot of people disagree but after 9 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Compared to Tampa it's surprisingly good.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. I have mixed feelings honestly. Compared to Dallas it's average.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a software engineer, 30, moved here 2 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in Cedar Grove and Maple Ridge, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Diverse dining options
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Not very walkable outside downtown
2. Can feel isolated
3. The traffic situation is growing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Cedar Grove: Great for families. surprisingly good vibes, walkable.
- Maple Ridge: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $40K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Public transit is hit or miss here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I love the pace of life here.

Bought a house here in 2023 and I have mixed feelings honestly. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want healthcare, then yeah this place is great. But if safety matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Used to live on the Downtown side, now on the Meadowbrook side. Completely different vibe. I love the pace of life here.

Weather-wise, the summers are improving and winters are established. You get used to it after the first year.
