Hi all, I'm retired and The median home value here is around $820,700, which is pretty steep. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The weather takes some getting used to. What neighborhoods would you suggest? TIA! I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a lawyer, 46, moved here 5 years ago from San Diego. I've lived in West and Highland, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Close to major attractions
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Can feel isolated
2. Limited shopping options
3. The cost of living situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- West: Great for remote workers. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- Highland: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Diego, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $80K-$110K here.
**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Hot take but it's improved dramatically in recent years. I know a lot of people disagree but after 4 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Came here for school and stayed because there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The pet-friendliness is honestly average and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a marketing manager who relocated here from Minneapolis about 7 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and work.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Decent public transit for the size
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Homeless population growing downtown
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are stable, gas is hit or miss.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

My experience has been mostly positive. I genuinely enjoy living here. The only thing I'd watch out for is housing market. Other than that, Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 3 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The West side vs the South side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value community vibe, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely pretty good and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (The Heights) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are better than expected, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 4-bedroom. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Compared to Boston it's underrated.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Salt Lake City and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Sunset. It's challenging for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in consulting. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like craft beer.
Hope this helps!.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Minneapolis and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in West. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in legal. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: excellent. Tons of options if you like Italian.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in Sunset for 12 years. Moved from Houston for school. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is excellent. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth up a bit than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 2-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.
**Employment:**
healthcare is strong here. tech is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are affordable for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
I love the pace of life here. The outdoor scene is improving - we have mountains within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Sunset schools are tough. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Limited shopping options. Bugs and humidity in summer. And public transit can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 6/10. It's not for everyone but it works for us.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a electrician who relocated here from Denver about 15 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and quality of life.
Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Active local events and festivals
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it pretty good compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are stable, gas is better than expected.
Socially, it exceeded my expectations. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
