First time home buyer in Hempstead

I work in education and It's a a smaller city city with about 58,569 people. Crime rate is something to consider -Hempstead sits at 119.0 per 100K. Household incomes average around $82,454 in Hempstead. You can expect to pay around $1,649 for rent here. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. What do you all think? Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The city has invested a lot in new development.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value healthcare, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely challenging and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Fairview) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Baltimore, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
