Not sure if this has been asked before, but The median home value here is around $442,100, which is pretty steep. The unemployment rate is 6.3%, which is concerning. With a population of 58,569, Hempstead is a smaller city. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Any advice would be great. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The suburbs are where most families end up. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are better than expected, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is public transit. the quality of life is solid. Worth doing your research before committing.

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. it's exactly what I was looking for. Internet is pretty good in most areas.

Weather-wise, the summers are underrated and winters are growing. You get used to it after the first year.

Hot take but it's not perfect but it works for me. I know a lot of people disagree but after 7 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 6 years ago from Denver and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Sunset. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in marketing. If you're in government you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 13 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: hit or miss. Tons of options if you like seafood.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Used to live on the Midtown side, now on the South side. Completely different vibe. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value housing market, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely average and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Sunset) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Minneapolis, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
