Moving to Hempstead with kids -good idea?

Longtime lurker here, I work in media and Homes are going for about $442,100 on average. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Worth the trade-offs? The weather takes some getting used to. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a electrician, 27, moved here 9 years ago from Minneapolis. I've lived in Springfield and Highland, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Decent public transit for the size
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The job market situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Springfield: Great for families. decent vibes, walkable.
- Highland: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Minneapolis, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are affordable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $100K-$110K here.

**Final verdict:**
Good luck with whatever you decide.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've lived in Meadowbrook for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Houston, I was surprised by job market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- The school system scene is hit or miss

The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Urban sprawl is real

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for singles. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want weather, then yeah this place is great. But if walkability matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The healthcare is genuinely pretty good and I've found it's been a really good experience overall. My neighborhood (Old Town) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Charlotte, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Atlanta and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in The Heights. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is wild right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in finance you might struggle.

People: Generally challenging. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Korean.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Bought a house here in 2018 and it's exactly what I was looking for. Property values have gone about the same since then.

I've lived in Maple Ridge for about 2 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

I'm still on the fence after all this time. When I first moved here from Boston, I was surprised by housing market. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good airport with direct flights
- The weather scene is tough

The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Urban sprawl is real

Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for retirees. Feel free to reach out with questions..

If you're remote, this place is great for cost of living. I'm still on the fence after all this time. Internet is average in most areas.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are surprisingly good, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.
