What I wish I knew before living in Hempstead

OK so We have two kids and It's a a smaller city city with about 58,569 people. Crime rate is something to consider -Hempstead sits at 119.0 per 100K. The weather takes some getting used to. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Should I be concerned?

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value job market, you'll love it. The job market is genuinely decent and I've found the quality of life is solid. My neighborhood (Meadowbrook) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Chicago, be prepared for the culture shock. weather is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Depends on what you're looking for honestly. If you want public transit, then yeah this place is great. But if nightlife matters to you, might want to look elsewhere.

Came here for quality of life and stayed because it exceeded my expectations. The outdoor recreation is honestly challenging and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a accountant who relocated here from Raleigh about 7 years ago. The main reasons were weather and retirement.

Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Decent public transit for the size

Cons that are real:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Homeless population growing downtown

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are developing, gas is improving.

Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

I work in retail here and the quality of life is solid. The job market for my field is surprisingly good. Good luck with whatever you decide..
