OK so Just moved here 10 months ago and Rent is about $1,011/month for a decent place. The weather takes some getting used to. The suburbs are where most families end up. What would you do? The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 2 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is decent.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are tough, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Hot take but I have mixed feelings honestly. I know a lot of people disagree but after 4 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value public transit, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Maple Ridge) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Baltimore, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Older homes are where the value is. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Cedar Grove. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in engineering. If you're in consulting you might struggle.
People: Generally decent. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like Indian.
Hope this helps!.

As someone who grew up here, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. A lot has changed in the past few years though. community vibe used to be much growing but now it's tough.

My experience has been mostly positive. I'm still on the fence after all this time. The only thing I'd watch out for is food scene. Other than that, No regrets on my end..

Came here for weather and stayed because it's exactly what I was looking for. The walkability is honestly decent and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

My experience has been mostly positive. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The only thing I'd watch out for is community vibe. Other than that, Definitely worth checking out..
