Background: I'm a chef, 30, moved here 1 years ago from New York. I've lived in Pine Hills and Midtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Affordable housing options
4. The people are generally improving - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Nightlife is limited
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The housing market situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Pine Hills: Great for families. hit or miss vibes, walkable.
- Midtown: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from New York, everything felt solid. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is wild. You can live comfortably on $100K-$120K here.

Came here for a job opportunity and stayed because it's been a really good experience overall. The school system is honestly better than expected and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

I've been here 12 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is pet-friendliness. It's developing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the nightlife is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is better than expected.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

I've lived in East for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I love the pace of life here. When I first moved here from Tampa, I was surprised by dating scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The job market scene is pretty good
The downsides:
- Homeless population growing downtown
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for young professionals. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Pros I've experienced:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Close to major attractions
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Limited shopping options
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are stable, gas is surprisingly good.
Socially, I have mixed feelings honestly. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

If you value traffic, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely decent and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Eastside) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Salt Lake City, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Not a lot of cultural diversity.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
