Hey folks, Homes are going for about $741,200 on average. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a teacher, 25, moved here 8 years ago from Portland. I've lived in Pine Hills and Oak Park, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Good healthcare facilities
3. Active local events and festivals
4. The people are generally solid - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Summers can be brutally hot
3. The walkability situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Pine Hills: Great for remote workers. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Oak Park: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Portland, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is growing. You can live comfortably on $60K-$140K here.
**Final verdict:**

I've lived in Meadowbrook for about 12 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's exactly what I was looking for. When I first moved here from Pittsburgh, I was surprised by outdoor recreation. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Affordable housing options
- The pet-friendliness scene is better than expected
The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Not very walkable outside downtown
Overall I'd rate it 8/10 for singles. Hope this helps!.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.
I've been here 9 years and I'm still on the fence after all this time. The thing nobody mentions is dating scene. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The North side vs the West side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a chef who relocated here from Baltimore about 5 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and weather.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are wild, gas is pretty good.
Socially, the quality of life is solid. It's not for everyone but it works for us..
