First post here. Been living here since 2012. With a population of 43,747, Hickory is a smaller city. It's a a smaller city city with about 43,747 people. The weather takes some getting used to. What do you all think? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. I've been living here for 8 years and I'd say it's improved dramatically in recent years. The school system is average compared to other places I've lived. Overall Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a sales manager, 31, moved here 8 years ago from New York. I've lived in Old Town and Meadowbrook, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good schools in most areas
2. Strong job market in several industries
3. Lots of new development happening
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Property taxes are high
2. Chain restaurants dominate
3. The community vibe situation is manageable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Old Town: Great for couples. underrated vibes, walkable.
- Meadowbrook: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from New York, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are developing. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $50K-$110K here.
**Final verdict:**
