Longtime lurker here, We have two kids and With a population of 56,690, Highland is a smaller city. Household incomes average around $77,979 in Highland. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The suburbs are where most families end up. Any advice would be great. Appreciate any input. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The weather takes some getting used to. I'd say it's better for families than young singles.

Came here for school and stayed because it was the best decision I ever made. The safety is honestly better than expected and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

The food scene here is decent. Tons of great Mediterranean places. I have mixed feelings honestly.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are underrated, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Used to live on the Cedar Grove side, now on the Highland side. Completely different vibe. I genuinely enjoy living here.

As someone who grew up here, I'm still on the fence after all this time. A lot has changed in the past few years though. healthcare used to be much established but now it's challenging.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a teacher who relocated here from San Francisco about 15 years ago. The main reasons were cost of living and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Close to major attractions
Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are reasonable, gas is underrated.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Definitely worth checking out..

Bought a house here in 2018 and I have mixed feelings honestly. Property values have gone down slightly since then.
