Curious what people think. You can expect to pay around $1,372 for rent here. The median home value here is around $385,900, which seems about average. The unemployment rate is 5.7%, which is about average. Homes are going for about $385,900 on average. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The suburbs are where most families end up.
Pros:
- Good job market
- Strong sense of community
- Walkable downtown
Cons:
- Hot summers
- Lack of diversity
- Chain restaurants dominate
What are your go-to spots? Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The weather takes some getting used to. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The city has invested a lot in new development. The suburbs are where most families end up. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The food scene here is surprisingly good. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a teacher who relocated here from Phoenix about 2 years ago. The main reasons were work and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Good healthcare facilities
- Active local events and festivals
Cons that are real:
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are reasonable, gas is pretty good.
Socially, I love the pace of life here. Hope this helps!.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 2 years ago from Denver and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Maple Ridge. It's improving for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in consulting. If you're in hospitality you might struggle.
People: Generally hit or miss. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: average. Tons of options if you like Southern.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've been living here for 7 years and I'd say the quality of life is solid. The job market is challenging compared to other places I've lived. Overall Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

My experience has been mostly positive. it's been a really good experience overall. The only thing I'd watch out for is healthcare. Other than that, It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.
I've been in The Heights for 8 years. Moved from Phoenix for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:
**Housing:**
The market right now is underrated. We bought in 2023 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Lots of new construction which should help.
**Employment:**
finance is strong here. finance is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are established for the area.
**Quality of Life:**
it's been a really good experience overall. The outdoor scene is underrated - we have state parks within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.
**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. The Heights schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.
**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Summers can be brutally hot. Not very walkable outside downtown. And job market can be frustrating.
**Bottom line:**
For remote workers, I'd say this is a 6/10. Definitely worth checking out.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The weather is genuinely excellent and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is established and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Phoenix, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Limited high-paying job options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

As someone who grew up here, I genuinely enjoy living here. A lot has changed in the past few years though. outdoor recreation used to be much growing but now it's average.
