Military spouse here. Median household income is $77,696, which feels about average for the area. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The city has invested a lot in new development. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are better than expected, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.
I've been here 15 years and I genuinely enjoy living here. The thing nobody mentions is food scene. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the cost of living is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is underrated.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Springfield side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Hope this helps!.

Came here for family and stayed because it was the best decision I ever made. The community vibe is honestly underrated and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Weather-wise, the summers are decent and winters are stable. You get used to it after the first year.
