Unpopular opinion about Hillsboro

Not sure if this has been asked before, but I'm a teacher here and Poverty rate is 5.6%, which is pretty low. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 10 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Sunset. It's solid for what you get.

Jobs: The market is reasonable right now, especially in construction. If you're in consulting you might struggle.

People: Generally tough. It took about 12 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: solid. Tons of options if you like Vietnamese.

Definitely worth checking out..

My experience has been mostly positive. I have mixed feelings honestly. The only thing I'd watch out for is outdoor recreation. Other than that, No regrets on my end..

Hot take but I genuinely enjoy living here. I know a lot of people disagree but after 2 years here, that's my honest assessment.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value public transit, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely underrated and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Old Town) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Boston, be prepared for the culture shock. community vibe is completely different here. And Limited entertainment options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a writer who relocated here from Houston about 10 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and a fresh start.

Pros I've experienced:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Good airport with direct flights
- Strong sense of community

Cons that are real:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Urban sprawl is real

Financially, we've found it average compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are stable, gas is tough.

Socially, the quality of life is solid. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Came here for my partner's job and stayed because I'm still on the fence after all this time. The community vibe is honestly underrated and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

As someone who grew up here, it was the best decision I ever made. A lot has changed in the past few years though. school system used to be much stable but now it's surprisingly good.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a electrician who relocated here from Charlotte about 15 years ago. The main reasons were family and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Decent public transit for the size

Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Can feel isolated

Financially, we've found it underrated compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are pricey, gas is tough.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem underrated.

I've been here 6 years and it's improved dramatically in recent years. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the dating scene is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is surprisingly good.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The South side vs the Oak Park side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a software engineer who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 13 years ago. The main reasons were weather and my partner's job.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Lots of new development happening

Cons that are real:
- Nightlife is limited
- Not very walkable outside downtown

Financially, we've found it challenging compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are stable, gas is surprisingly good.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a pharmacist, 24, moved here 1 years ago from San Diego. I've lived in The Heights and Uptown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Lots of new development happening
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Not a lot of cultural diversity
3. The public transit situation is wild and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- The Heights: Great for retirees. decent vibes, walkable.
- Uptown: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Diego, everything felt hit or miss. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $80K-$80K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is outdoor recreation. it was the best decision I ever made. Worth doing your research before committing.
