What's it really like living in Hillsboro?

Longtime lurker here, I've been here for 11 years and Crime rate is something to consider -Hillsboro sits at 247.9 per 100K. Poverty rate is 5.6%, which is pretty low. The unemployment rate is 3.3%, which is pretty low. Homes are going for about $483,400 on average. The weather takes some getting used to. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The city has invested a lot in new development. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Good schools
- Diverse community
- Good healthcare facilities

Cons:
- Hot summers
- Rising rent prices
- High property taxes
- Boring for young people
- Limited cultural events
Looking forward to hearing from you all. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are hit or miss, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Denver and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Downtown. It's average for what you get.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in education. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.

People: Generally better than expected. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: average. Tons of options if you like Asian.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a chef who relocated here from Boston about 5 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and work.

Pros I've experienced:
- Active local events and festivals
- Four distinct seasons
- Lots of family-friendly activities

Cons that are real:
- Can feel isolated
- Bugs and humidity in summer

Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are established, gas is underrated.

Socially, it's exactly what I was looking for. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Hot take but the quality of life is solid. I know a lot of people disagree but after 8 years here, that's my honest assessment.
