Not sure if this has been asked before, but My family moved here when I was a kid. Household incomes average around $47,817 in Hillsdale. Homes are going for about $131,300 on average. Poverty rate is 16.3%, which is higher than I expected. You can expect to pay around $801 for rent here. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. What would you do? The city has invested a lot in new development. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is walkability. the quality of life is solid. Worth doing your research before committing.

The food scene here is tough. Tons of great seafood places. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a real estate agent who relocated here from Austin about 6 years ago. The main reasons were retirement and my partner's job.
Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good internet infrastructure
- Lots of family-friendly activities
Cons that are real:
- Winters are long and cold
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are developing, gas is hit or miss.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I've lived in Uptown for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from New York, I was surprised by dating scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- The safety scene is improving
The downsides:
- Rising rent and home prices
- Limited shopping options
Overall I'd rate it 9/10 for families. Happy to answer more specific questions..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem better than expected.
I've been here 3 years and it was the best decision I ever made. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the walkability is legit. And if you're into kayaking, this place is hit or miss.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Eastside side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
