Raising a family in Hilton Head Island -thoughts?

First post here. I'm originally from Charlotte and Homes are going for about $652,100 on average. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Does this match your experience?

I've been living here for 14 years and I'd say it exceeded my expectations. The healthcare is improving compared to other places I've lived. Overall Hope this helps!.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 2-bedroom. the quality of life is solid. Compared to Boston it's hit or miss.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a software engineer, 51, moved here 3 years ago from Charlotte. I've lived in Fairview and Lakewood, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Rising rent and home prices
2. Urban sprawl is real
3. The outdoor recreation situation is established and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Fairview: Great for families. excellent vibes, walkable.
- Lakewood: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Charlotte, everything felt decent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are stable. Gas is stable. You can live comfortably on $90K-$100K here.

**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
