Born and raised here. Rent is about $1,226/month for a decent place. Poverty rate is 1.0%, which is pretty low. Average temperature is around 45--F, so expect cold winters. The unemployment rate is 0.3%, which is pretty low. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The city has invested a lot in new development. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The suburbs are where most families end up. Thoughts? There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. The food scene here is surprisingly good. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a nurse, 32, moved here 4 years ago from Baltimore. I've lived in Sunset and East, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Close to major attractions
2. Affordable housing options
3. Lots of family-friendly activities
4. The people are generally underrated - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The pet-friendliness situation is affordable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Sunset: Great for remote workers. pretty good vibes, walkable.
- East: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Baltimore, everything felt improving. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $50K-$110K here.
**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Houston and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Sunset. It's tough for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in construction. If you're in consulting you might struggle.
People: Generally excellent. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Italian.
Hope this helps!.

From a safety perspective, it really depends on the area. Some neighborhoods are tough, others not so much. Do your research on specific streets.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is job market. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Worth doing your research before committing.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely average and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Cedar Grove) is pricey and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Nashville, be prepared for the culture shock. housing market is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I work in healthcare here and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The job market for my field is pretty good. Hope this helps!.
