The unemployment rate is 2.5%, which is pretty low. Poverty rate is 7.6%, which is pretty low. The city has invested a lot in new development. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The city has invested a lot in new development. The city has invested a lot in new development. The food scene here is surprisingly good. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The suburbs are where most families end up.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value safety, you'll love it. The school system is genuinely surprisingly good and I've found I love the pace of life here. My neighborhood (Fairview) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Houston, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 10 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's pricey and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the healthcare is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Fairview side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
No regrets on my end..

Used to live on the Eastside side, now on the South side. Completely different vibe. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

I've been here 6 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is safety. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into fishing, this place is tough.

Would recommend to anyone considering it..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Chicago and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in North. It's decent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in retail. If you're in finance you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 8 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like Thai.
Happy to answer more specific questions..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a data analyst who relocated here from Austin about 11 years ago. The main reasons were school and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Good internet infrastructure
- Diverse dining options
Cons that are real:
- Bugs and humidity in summer
- Far from beaches/mountains
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are reasonable, gas is challenging.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Feel free to reach out with questions..
