Been meaning to ask this. We're a young couple and Crime rate is something to consider -Holiday City-Berkeley sits at 36.9 per 100K. Average temperature is around 53--F, so expect cold winters. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from Nashville and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Sunset. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is competitive right now, especially in engineering. If you're in consulting you might struggle.
People: Generally surprisingly good. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Asian.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

I've lived in Uptown for about 7 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from Austin, I was surprised by nightlife. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Close to major attractions
- The cultural scene scene is solid
The downsides:
- Chain restaurants dominate
- Bugs and humidity in summer

- South: Great for singles. decent vibes, walkable.
- Highland: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Portland, everything felt challenging. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $80K-$100K here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem improving.
I've been here 11 years and I love the pace of life here. The thing nobody mentions is school system. It's established and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the food scene is legit. And if you're into camping, this place is improving.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Highland side vs the Sunset side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
