Housing in Holtsville compared to Memphis

It's a a small town city with about 19,250 people. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value safety, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely decent and I've found I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from New York, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a project manager who relocated here from Charlotte about 10 years ago. The main reasons were family and quality of life.

Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Decent public transit for the size

Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Chain restaurants dominate

Financially, we've found it excellent compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are competitive, gas is hit or miss.

Socially, I love the pace of life here. No regrets on my end..

We moved here with our family and it's not perfect but it works for me. Schools in Lakewood area are tough. Kids love it here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem excellent.

I've been here 1 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's reasonable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into running, this place is excellent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Sunset side vs the Highland side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a accountant, 42, moved here 5 years ago from Raleigh. I've lived in Riverside and Pine Hills, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Good internet infrastructure
2. Affordable housing options
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally challenging - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Can feel isolated
3. The safety situation is competitive and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Riverside: Great for remote workers. solid vibes, walkable.
- Pine Hills: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Raleigh, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are growing. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $70K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
Give it a chance - it might surprise you.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
