Biggest downsides of living in Home?

Hey folks, I grew up here but left for a while. It's a a small town city with about 1,718 people. Crime rate is something to consider -Home sits at 213.1 per 100K. With a population of 1,718, Home is a small town. The median home value here is around $404,700, which is pretty steep. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The suburbs are where most families end up. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Close to nature
- Strong sense of community
- Plenty of shopping options
- Active local events

Cons:
- Cold winters
- Limited dining options
- Far from major airports
- Homelessness issues downtown
What would you do? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The suburbs are where most families end up. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Property taxes are high but you get good services. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level.

Hot take but it exceeded my expectations. I know a lot of people disagree but after 6 years here, that's my honest assessment.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 13 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Cedar Grove. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in marketing. If you're in government you might struggle.

People: Generally excellent. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: tough. Tons of options if you like sushi.

Hope this helps!.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value cost of living, you'll love it. The cultural scene is genuinely better than expected and I've found it's improved dramatically in recent years. My neighborhood (Westside) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Public transit is decent here. You'll probably need a car for most things. I genuinely enjoy living here.
