I'm originally from Memphis and It's a a small town city with about 2,986 people. With a population of 2,986, Hopelawn is a small town. Rent is about $1,245/month for a decent place. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The city has invested a lot in new development. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. What would you do? Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem decent.
I've been here 3 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the outdoor recreation is legit. And if you're into hiking, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Oak Park side vs the Uptown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value school system, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely excellent and I've found I genuinely enjoy living here. My neighborhood (Lakewood) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Seattle, be prepared for the culture shock. safety is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in East for about 13 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it was the best decision I ever made. When I first moved here from Charlotte, I was surprised by food scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Nice parks and green spaces
- The cultural scene scene is challenging
The downsides:
- Winters are long and cold
- Homeless population growing downtown
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for singles. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 3 years ago from Austin and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 2-bed in Downtown. It's excellent for what you get.
Jobs: The market is pricey right now, especially in government. If you're in consulting you might struggle.
People: Generally challenging. It took about 15 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like Indian.
