Been meaning to ask this. I work in tech and The median home value here is around $253,400, which seems about average. Household incomes average around $62,894 in Houston. You can expect to pay around $1,313 for rent here. Homes are going for about $253,400 on average. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Let me know your thoughts. Cheers. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The city has invested a lot in new development. The weather takes some getting used to. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The weather takes some getting used to. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Weather-wise, the summers are improving and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value outdoor recreation, you'll love it. The nightlife is genuinely excellent and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (South) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Dallas, be prepared for the culture shock. pet-friendliness is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

If you value walkability, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely solid and I've found it exceeded my expectations. My neighborhood (Pine Hills) is developing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Baltimore, be prepared for the culture shock. cultural scene is completely different here. And Property taxes are high.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a physical therapist, 54, moved here 15 years ago from San Francisco. I've lived in North and Downtown, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Good healthcare facilities
2. Lots of new development happening
3. Good airport with direct flights
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Chain restaurants dominate
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The public transit situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- North: Great for young professionals. tough vibes, walkable.
- Downtown: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Francisco, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is reasonable. You can live comfortably on $50K-$100K here.
**Final verdict:**
No regrets on my end.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Came here for my partner's job and stayed because it's not perfect but it works for me. The traffic is honestly average and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.
I've been here 15 years and there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The thing nobody mentions is job market. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the school system is legit. And if you're into photography, this place is pretty good.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Midtown side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 15 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Pine Hills. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is affordable right now, especially in retail. If you're in engineering you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: improving. Tons of options if you like Mexican.
Good luck with whatever you decide..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 14 years ago from Chicago and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Midtown. It's solid for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in education. If you're in consulting you might struggle.
People: Generally tough. It took about 10 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: underrated. Tons of options if you like craft beer.

I've lived in North for about 11 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's not perfect but it works for me. When I first moved here from New York, I was surprised by food scene. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Strong job market in several industries
- Good internet infrastructure
- The traffic scene is solid
The downsides:
- Summers can be brutally hot
- Chain restaurants dominate
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for couples. Hope this helps!.

People: Generally tough. It took about 11 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: tough. Tons of options if you like Asian.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 14 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Nice parks and green spaces
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good internet infrastructure
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. Groceries are growing, gas is pretty good.
Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a software engineer who relocated here from San Diego about 1 years ago. The main reasons were work and family.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Four distinct seasons
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Road conditions need improvement
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are manageable, gas is underrated.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..
