Planning a move to Houston — neighborhoods?

Alright, I'm single, late 20s, and Median household income is $62,894, which feels about average for the area. Crime rate is something to consider — Houston sits at 1,072.2 per 100K. The median home value here is around $253,400, which seems about average. You can expect to pay around $1,313 for rent here. It's changing fast — some good, some not so much. The city has invested a lot in new development. The suburbs are where most families end up. Does this match your experience? Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem surprisingly good.

I've been here 8 years and it's been a really good experience overall. The thing nobody mentions is nightlife. It's manageable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the traffic is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is improving.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Westside side vs the Old Town side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Happy to answer more specific questions..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a electrician, 39, moved here 12 years ago from Nashville. I've lived in The Heights and Fairview, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Great outdoor activities nearby
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Good internet infrastructure
4. The people are generally better than expected - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Bugs and humidity in summer
2. Far from beaches/mountains
3. The walkability situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- The Heights: Great for couples. better than expected vibes, walkable.
- Fairview: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Nashville, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is pricey. You can live comfortably on $90K-$130K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.
