Raising a family in Howard -thoughts?

Been meaning to ask this. I'm originally from Portland and Rent is about $1,053/month for a decent place. Poverty rate is 3.7%, which is pretty low. The unemployment rate is 1.3%, which is pretty low. Median household income is $84,896, which feels pretty solid for the area. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The city has invested a lot in new development. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly.

Pros:
- Close to nature
- Diverse community
- Active local events

Cons:
- Cold winters
- Limited dining options
- Boring for young people
- Poor road conditions
- Not enough green space
Any advice would be great. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Used to live on the Maple Ridge side, now on the Greenfield side. Completely different vibe. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Maple Ridge for 9 years. Moved from Seattle for quality of life. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is underrated. We bought in 2016 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 1-bed in a safe area. Older homes are where the value is.

**Employment:**
hospitality is strong here. retail is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are affordable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The outdoor scene is pretty good - we have ski resorts within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Maple Ridge schools are average. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Rising rent and home prices. Bugs and humidity in summer. And outdoor recreation can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For young professionals, I'd say this is a 6/10. Happy to answer more specific questions.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value job market, you'll love it. The public transit is genuinely solid and I've found I'm still on the fence after all this time. My neighborhood (Greenfield) is manageable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Austin, be prepared for the culture shock. traffic is completely different here. And Limited public transit options.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.
