Things that make Huntington unique

Hi all, I've been here for 12 years and With a population of 20,117, Huntington is a small town. It's a a small town city with about 20,117 people. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Would love some local perspective. Any help is appreciated. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are reasonable. You get used to it after the first year.

Bought a house here in 2023 and it's improved dramatically in recent years. Property values have gone about the same since then.

Public transit is challenging here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's not perfect but it works for me.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's improved dramatically in recent years. The only thing I'd watch out for is food scene. Other than that, Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Sunset for 12 years. Moved from Charlotte for a job opportunity. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is better than expected. We bought in 2017 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 3-bed in a safe area. Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable.

**Employment:**
construction is strong here. real estate is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are stable for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
it's improved dramatically in recent years. The outdoor scene is solid - we have desert landscapes within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Sunset schools are excellent. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Homeless population growing downtown. Limited entertainment options. And food scene can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For couples, I'd say this is a 5/10. It's not for everyone but it works for us.. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.

If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The dating scene is genuinely tough and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Downtown) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.

But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. walkability is completely different here. And Summers can be brutally hot.

My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 4 years ago from LA and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in West. It's pretty good for what you get.

Jobs: The market is developing right now, especially in legal. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.

People: Generally solid. It took about 9 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Asian.

No regrets on my end..

We moved here with our family and it's exactly what I was looking for. Schools in Lakewood area are average. Kids love it here.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.

I've been here 12 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is public transit. It's affordable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the housing market is legit. And if you're into golfing, this place is hit or miss.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The South side vs the Eastside side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

It's not for everyone but it works for us..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a social worker, 24, moved here 14 years ago from Salt Lake City. I've lived in South and North, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Low crime in most neighborhoods
3. Strong job market in several industries
4. The people are generally excellent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Summers can be brutally hot
2. Limited high-paying job options
3. The community vibe situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for families. tough vibes, walkable.
- North: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Salt Lake City, everything felt better than expected. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are reasonable. Gas is established. You can live comfortably on $40K-$90K here.

**Final verdict:**
Definitely worth checking out.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.

I'm a project manager who relocated here from Raleigh about 15 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and a job opportunity.

Pros I've experienced:
- Cost of living is very reasonable
- Good schools in most areas
- Four distinct seasons

Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Property taxes are high

Financially, we've found it tough compared to where we came from. The market is competitive but not impossible. Groceries are reasonable, gas is surprisingly good.

Socially, it's been a really good experience overall. Feel free to reach out with questions..
