Raising a family in Huntington Station -thoughts?

First post here. I'm single, late 20s, and Crime rate is something to consider -Huntington Station sits at 22.0 per 100K. The median home value here is around $540,400, which is pretty steep. Homes are going for about $540,400 on average. Rent is about $1,867/month for a decent place. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that.

Pros:
- Affordable cost of living
- Close to nature
- Good healthcare facilities
- Good internet infrastructure
- Active local events

Cons:
- Not very walkable
- Few job opportunities in some fields
- Far from major airports
- Limited cultural events
Has anyone dealt with this? Property taxes are high but you get good services. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem tough.

I've been here 13 years and it's exactly what I was looking for. The thing nobody mentions is outdoor recreation. It's wild and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

That said, the community vibe is legit. And if you're into surfing, this place is decent.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Highland side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.

Good luck with whatever you decide..

Bought a house here in 2017 and I genuinely enjoy living here. Property values have gone up a bit since then.

Renting here right now, paying about /mo for a 3-bedroom. it exceeded my expectations. Compared to Denver it's average.

I've lived in Oak Park for about 8 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.

the quality of life is solid. When I first moved here from Austin, I was surprised by cost of living. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.

A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Lots of new development happening
- The safety scene is decent

The downsides:
- Limited high-paying job options
- Can feel isolated

Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for remote workers. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Weather-wise, the summers are better than expected and winters are wild. You get used to it after the first year.
