Is Huntington still affordable?

OK so I'm originally from Indianapolis and Rent is about $863/month for a decent place. Poverty rate is 17.4%, which is higher than I expected. The unemployment rate is 4.3%, which is about average. Homes are going for about $118,800 on average. The weather takes some getting used to. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. Night life is decent if you know the right spots.

Pros:
- Good job market
- Nice parks and trails
- Low taxes

Cons:
- Limited public transit
- Mosquitoes and humidity
- Not enough green space
Is this normal for Huntington? Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The weather takes some getting used to. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The weather takes some getting used to. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Weather-wise, the summers are challenging and winters are established. You get used to it after the first year.

Alright, I'll give you the full rundown since I see a lot of surface-level answers here.

I've been in Lakewood for 14 years. Moved from Boston for family. Here's my honest, detailed take:

**Housing:**
The market right now is solid. We bought in 2024 at k and it's now worth down slightly than that. If you're renting, expect /mo for a decent 4-bed in a safe area. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals.

**Employment:**
education is strong here. hospitality is hit or miss. If you're remote, you'll love the cost of living. Average salaries are pricey for the area.

**Quality of Life:**
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The outdoor scene is pretty good - we have mountains within easy driving distance. Dining has gotten so much better in the past few years.

**Schools (if relevant):**
Varies hugely by district. Lakewood schools are surprisingly good. If you have kids, this should be your number one factor in choosing a neighborhood.

**The Bad:**
I'd be lying if I said everything is great. Nightlife is limited. Road conditions need improvement. And safety can be frustrating.

**Bottom line:**
For retirees, I'd say this is a 8/10. Hope this helps!. Feel free to ask specific questions - happy to help.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 12 years ago from Boston and here's my honest breakdown:

Housing: The market is competitive but not impossible. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Westside. It's better than expected for what you get.

Jobs: The market is stable right now, especially in government. If you're in legal you might struggle.

People: Generally excellent. It took about 5 months to build a solid friend group.

Food: challenging. Tons of options if you like Mediterranean.

No regrets on my end..

Bought a house here in 2023 and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Property values have gone about the same since then.
