Curious what people think. Rent is about $995/month for a decent place.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value housing market, you'll love it. The walkability is genuinely challenging and I've found I have mixed feelings honestly. My neighborhood (Old Town) is growing and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from San Diego, be prepared for the culture shock. job market is completely different here. And Winters are long and cold.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

I've lived in Uptown for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it exceeded my expectations. When I first moved here from Salt Lake City, I was surprised by safety. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Great outdoor activities nearby
- Active local events and festivals
- The cost of living scene is better than expected
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for retirees. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

We moved here with our family and I love the pace of life here. Schools in Maple Ridge area are surprisingly good. Kids love it here.

Came here for a job opportunity and stayed because I love the pace of life here. The public transit is honestly better than expected and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

Public transit is pretty good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. it's improved dramatically in recent years.

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, it's exactly what I was looking for. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a teacher who relocated here from Pittsburgh about 13 years ago. The main reasons were my partner's job and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Active local events and festivals
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Can feel isolated
Financially, we've found it improving compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are stable, gas is decent.
Socially, there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. Would recommend to anyone considering it..
