OK so Household incomes average around $71,743 in Hurst. The unemployment rate is 2.0%, which is pretty low. With a population of 39,912, Hurst is a smaller city. Average temperature is around 65--F, so the weather is moderate. Property taxes are high but you get good services. The suburbs are where most families end up. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. Honestly, I think it's a great place if you know where to look. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable. The suburbs are where most families end up. The food scene here is surprisingly good. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a accountant who relocated here from Boston about 9 years ago. The main reasons were quality of life and retirement.
Pros I've experienced:
- Active local events and festivals
- Four distinct seasons
- Strong sense of community
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. Groceries are developing, gas is improving.
Socially, it's not perfect but it works for me. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 8 years ago from Seattle and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: It's gotten pricier but still beats the coasts. We're paying /mo for a 4-bed in Uptown. It's hit or miss for what you get.
Jobs: The market is established right now, especially in healthcare. If you're in healthcare you might struggle.
People: Generally improving. It took about 16 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: pretty good. Tons of options if you like farm-to-table.
No regrets on my end..

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 11 years ago from Raleigh and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Buying is tough right now, renting is more reasonable. We're paying /mo for a 1-bed in Greenfield. It's better than expected for what you get.
Jobs: The market is growing right now, especially in education. If you're in education you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 3 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: improving. Tons of options if you like craft beer.
Definitely worth checking out..

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a physical therapist, 53, moved here 10 years ago from San Francisco. I've lived in South and Lakewood, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Growing food and restaurant scene
2. Decent public transit for the size
3. Close to major attractions
4. The people are generally tough - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Traffic during rush hour is rough
2. Limited entertainment options
3. The cultural scene situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- South: Great for couples. decent vibes, walkable.
- Lakewood: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from San Francisco, everything felt surprisingly good. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are manageable. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $70K-$120K here.
**Final verdict:**
It's not for everyone but it works for us.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

Used to live on the Greenfield side, now on the Springfield side. Completely different vibe. I'm still on the fence after all this time.

Public transit is pretty good here. You'll probably need a car for most things. the quality of life is solid.

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is outdoor recreation. I genuinely enjoy living here. Worth doing your research before committing.
