Longtime lurker here, The unemployment rate is 2.0%, which is pretty low. Average temperature is around 65--F, so the weather is moderate. It's a very car-dependent city, for better or worse. The parks and outdoor areas are a huge plus. Should I be concerned? TIA! Property taxes are high but you get good services. The suburbs are where most families end up. I'd say it's better for families than young singles. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The food scene here is surprisingly good. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The food scene here is surprisingly good. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The suburbs are where most families end up. The city has invested a lot in new development. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. The weather takes some getting used to. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. Cost of living is definitely rising, but still manageable.

Weather-wise, the summers are decent and winters are manageable. You get used to it after the first year.

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value weather, you'll love it. The cost of living is genuinely challenging and I've found it was the best decision I ever made. My neighborhood (Downtown) is affordable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Miami, be prepared for the culture shock. dating scene is completely different here. And Nightlife is limited.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a pharmacist who relocated here from Dallas about 4 years ago. The main reasons were school and a fresh start.
Pros I've experienced:
- Good schools in most areas
- Good internet infrastructure
- Four distinct seasons
Cons that are real:
- Limited public transit options
- Limited entertainment options
Financially, we've found it better than expected compared to where we came from. If you look outside the main areas you can find deals. Groceries are manageable, gas is average.
Socially, it was the best decision I ever made. Definitely worth checking out..

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem pretty good.
I've been here 10 years and I have mixed feelings honestly. The thing nobody mentions is community vibe. It's stable and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the public transit is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the Springfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Feel free to reach out with questions..

If you value pet-friendliness, you'll love it. The pet-friendliness is genuinely better than expected and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (Oak Park) is reasonable and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Portland, be prepared for the culture shock. nightlife is completely different here. And Chain restaurants dominate.

OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.
Background: I'm a social worker, 31, moved here 13 years ago from Tampa. I've lived in Westside and The Heights, and traveled to most parts of the metro.
**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Affordable housing options
3. Strong sense of community
4. The people are generally hit or miss - I found my community within the first year
**What I don't love:**
1. Urban sprawl is real
2. Not very walkable outside downtown
3. The healthcare situation is reasonable and doesn't seem to be improving
**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Westside: Great for families. solid vibes, walkable.
- The Heights: More affordable, family-friendly.
**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.
**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Tampa, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are competitive. Gas is developing. You can live comfortably on $80K-$70K here.
**Final verdict:**
Would recommend to anyone considering it.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've lived in Westside for about 14 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. When I first moved here from Portland, I was surprised by school system. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Good schools in most areas
- Decent public transit for the size
- The outdoor recreation scene is underrated
The downsides:
- Not very walkable outside downtown
- Bugs and humidity in summer
Overall I'd rate it 5/10 for families. Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I'd say the biggest thing people don't talk about is school system. it's been a really good experience overall. Worth doing your research before committing.
