So, I'm a teacher here and Median household income is $59,480, which feels about average for the area. It's a a mid-size city city with about 122K people. With a population of 122K, Independence is a mid-size city. Traffic can be rough during rush hour, no sugarcoating that. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The school system varies a lot by neighborhood. Thoughts? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Property taxes are high but you get good services.

Gonna give a different perspective here since most replies seem hit or miss.
I've been here 4 years and the quality of life is solid. The thing nobody mentions is healthcare. It's growing and it affects daily life more than you'd think.
That said, the weather is legit. And if you're into skiing, this place is tough.
Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The Old Town side vs the Downtown side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I've been here 10 years and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. The thing nobody mentions is weather. It's competitive and it affects daily life more than you'd think.

Neighborhood matters A LOT here. The The Heights side vs the Greenfield side are basically different cities. Make sure you visit both before deciding.
Definitely worth checking out..

Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a sales manager who relocated here from Salt Lake City about 8 years ago. The main reasons were school and a job opportunity.
Pros I've experienced:
- Friendly community, easy to meet people
- Growing food and restaurant scene
- Strong job market in several industries
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Chain restaurants dominate
Financially, we've found it surprisingly good compared to where we came from. Older homes are where the value is. Groceries are reasonable, gas is challenging.
Socially, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Give it a chance - it might surprise you..

Not gonna lie, the first year was rough. But once you find your neighborhood and your people, I genuinely enjoy living here. Feel free to reach out with questions..
