Great question. I'll try to be comprehensive here.
I'm a HR manager who relocated here from Denver about 13 years ago. The main reasons were a fresh start and school.
Pros I've experienced:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Affordable housing options
- Good airport with direct flights
Cons that are real:
- Traffic during rush hour is rough
- Dating scene is rough
Financially, we've found it decent compared to where we came from. Lots of new construction which should help. Groceries are manageable, gas is underrated.
Socially, I genuinely enjoy living here. It's not for everyone but it works for us..

I'm a real estate agent and I've found there are trade-offs but the good outweighs the bad. The community is solid and there's always something going on.

I've lived in Highland for about 15 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from San Francisco, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Close to major attractions
- Affordable housing options
- The outdoor recreation scene is solid
The downsides:
- Urban sprawl is real
- Not a lot of cultural diversity
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for retirees. No regrets on my end..

Weather-wise, the summers are tough and winters are affordable. You get used to it after the first year.

My experience has been mostly positive. it's improved dramatically in recent years. The only thing I'd watch out for is healthcare. Other than that, Would recommend to anyone considering it..

The food scene here is average. Tons of great Mediterranean places. it exceeded my expectations.
