Anyone else feel this way? Downtown has improved a lot in recent years.

OK so I've been meaning to write this for a while. I moved here 9 years ago from Miami and here's my honest breakdown:
Housing: Lots of new construction which should help. We're paying /mo for a 3-bed in Oak Park. It's average for what you get.
Jobs: The market is manageable right now, especially in manufacturing. If you're in real estate you might struggle.
People: Generally better than expected. It took about 4 months to build a solid friend group.
Food: better than expected. Tons of options if you like Italian.
Your mileage may vary depending on what you're looking for..

Weather-wise, the summers are average and winters are manageable. You get used to it after the first year.

Bought a house here in 2023 and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else right now. Property values have gone down slightly since then.

I've been living here for 8 years and I'd say it's been a really good experience overall. The cost of living is hit or miss compared to other places I've lived. Overall Would recommend to anyone considering it..

I've lived in Fairview for about 5 years now, so I can give you a pretty detailed perspective.
it's improved dramatically in recent years. When I first moved here from Portland, I was surprised by traffic. It took some adjustment but now I wouldn't trade it.
A few things worth knowing:
- Low crime in most neighborhoods
- Strong sense of community
- The public transit scene is underrated
The downsides:
- Nightlife is limited
- Road conditions need improvement
Overall I'd rate it 6/10 for remote workers. Good luck with whatever you decide..

My experience has been mostly positive. I have mixed feelings honestly. The only thing I'd watch out for is traffic. Other than that, Happy to answer more specific questions..

Real talk - this place is not for everyone, and I think that's OK.
If you value dating scene, you'll love it. The traffic is genuinely underrated and I've found it's not perfect but it works for me. My neighborhood (South) is competitive and I feel safe walking around at night.
But if you're coming from Tampa, be prepared for the culture shock. food scene is completely different here. And Limited shopping options.
My advice would be to visit for at least a week before committing. Rent first, don't buy. And explore multiple neighborhoods - they're all different.

Bought a house here in 2022 and it's exactly what I was looking for. Property values have gone about the same since then.
