Is Iowa City worth it salary-wise?

Longtime lurker here, Military spouse here. Crime rate is something to consider -Iowa City sits at 215.8 per 100K. With a population of 75,264, Iowa City is a smaller city. You can expect to pay around $1,094 for rent here. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. It's not perfect, but the community is solid. The weather takes some getting used to. Should I be concerned? The weather takes some getting used to. There's a growing tech scene which is exciting. Downtown has improved a lot in recent years. The city has invested a lot in new development. Public transit needs a lot of work honestly. It's changing fast -some good, some not so much. There's a real sense of community in certain neighborhoods. People here are genuinely friendly, not just surface-level. The suburbs are where most families end up. Property taxes are high but you get good services. Night life is decent if you know the right spots. The food scene here is surprisingly good. The weather takes some getting used to. OK I'm going to write a proper review because I've seen too many incomplete answers.

Background: I'm a pharmacist, 54, moved here 3 years ago from Denver. I've lived in Sunset and Greenfield, and traveled to most parts of the metro.

**What I love:**
1. Cost of living is very reasonable
2. Good schools in most areas
3. Diverse dining options
4. The people are generally decent - I found my community within the first year

**What I don't love:**
1. Limited public transit options
2. Property taxes are high
3. The nightlife situation is developing and doesn't seem to be improving

**Neighborhoods I'd recommend:**
- Sunset: Great for couples. challenging vibes, walkable.
- Greenfield: More affordable, family-friendly.

**Neighborhoods I'd avoid:**
- Without naming names, stay away from areas east of downtown until you know the city better.

**Cost comparison:**
Coming from Denver, everything felt excellent. Rent is about /mo. Groceries are pricey. Gas is competitive. You can live comfortably on $60K-$120K here.

**Final verdict:**
Feel free to reach out with questions.. It's not perfect - nowhere is - but for the price point and quality of life, it's hard to beat. DM me if you have specific questions.

I've been living here for 5 years and I'd say I love the pace of life here. The nightlife is decent compared to other places I've lived. Overall Happy to answer more specific questions..
